Hey, is there/does anyone know of a way to keep cats (or in my case just *a* cat) away from my house? There is this outdoor cat that roams around my area of the neighborhood (technically, I think it belongs to the people across the street, but I don't think they actually take care of it more than leaving food out for it). The problem with this cat, is that it likes to come up and sit in our front windows at night, right where *my* cat likes to sit and look *out*. She's such a sweet old lap-kitty, but this other cat just riles her up to no end. If she sees him, she gets all puffed up and hisses and attacks the window, and the outdoor cat won't go away unless we really bang on the windows to scare him off, or like tonight when I had to go chase him off with a broom. We've tried keeping the blinds down so she won't see him, but she just paws through the blinds to look out the window, and if he's there she'll get stuck in them attacking him through the window.

Any ideas what to do? I am very tempted to go over to the neighbor's house (who I am pretty sure own the cat) and ask them to do something about him, although I doubt they will. I just really don't want to call like... animal control or something like that :<

there are a few things you can put on the windowsill to deter him from sitting there. apparently cats don't like to walk on tinfoil. as well, there are deterrents you can buy from the store (although the one we tried to get our cat to not scratch furniture was pretty irritating for us, too. it's meant to leave a bitter taste in your mouth, and boy does it ever). there are also more extreme solutions. wolf urine can keep away all sorts of pests. but it's pretty damned strong and probably expensive. you can try blocking off the windowsill on the outside so he can't sit up there.
i hope that helps. i can't really think of anything else. (:

I'll second the 'something on the outside' since it's just the windowsill. My cats HATE sticky stuff, so something like clear flypaper or just double sided tape might keep from off, even if it needs to be replaced now and then.

Wolf or coyote urine will usually scare off other animals. A little expensive, but should do the trick. Try something sticky first for a cheaper solution, but the other cat might just ignore it.

Hmm... A cheap way might be to try coffee grounds. My mom started placing used coffee grounds around the garden, and our cats (and the dogs, too!) rarely set foot in there.

I can't guarantee it works, but it's cheap and worth a try. Otherwise, you might want to research a few alternative methods; I hear that there's some sort of cayenne-based spray, I think, that is a deterrent. Dunno if that works with cats; I just know it works on baby chicks to keep them from picking the down off each other. xD
